Prof. Ali received his Ph.D. degree from the Department of Chemistry, Indian Institute of Technology-Bombay, Mumbai under the guidance of Prof. S. N. Datta in 2007.  Thereafter he moved to the Department of Physics at Uppsala University, Sweden to work with Prof. Peter Oppeneer as a postdoctoral fellow. In 2009 he moved to Ruhr-University, Bochum, Germany after receiving the Alexander von Humboldt Fellowship to work with Prof. Dominik Marx. In 2013, he again moved back to Uppsala University but at the year-end of 2014, he moved to University College London, the UK where he was working with Prof. Jochen Blumberger. Mid of 2015, he moved back to India accepting an independent faculty position at Institute of Nano Science and Technology, Mohali, Punjab. Since then he is serving as a professor (Scientist-F) and leading his research group.
