Single-Molecule Magnates

Single-Molecule Magnates

The development of novel magnetic materials has revolutionized the technology of computing and data store. Such magnetic materials generally comprised of transition metals, rare-earth elements and their oxides. Despite the enormous success, the materials are very expensive, as these require extreme conditions for fabrication. Additionally, the materials are not very environment friendly. It consumes higher operational power and subsequently releases a huge amount of heat that throws another challenge in their devise applications.

The alternative solution to these known issues is to develop organic and metal-organic molecular magnetic materials. The origin of the magnetic properties in molecular materials is the spin of the electron residing within the open-shells. One of the major challenges remains in developing of pure organic materials stable at elevated temperature with high exchange couplings. In this project we aim to decode various factors behind the stabilization of organic radicals at the elevated temperature. The successful completion of this project is expected to establish a theoretical protocol of obtaining stable high-spin molecular systems with strong exchange interactions. In this project we will also introduce the control of magnetic properties either by redox states or through the external stimuli for molecular magnetic switch applications.

We are working at the Institute of Nano Science and Technology Mohali, one of the leading research institutes in India in the field of Nano Science. INST is located in Chandigarh, one of the major cities of India.
